Peripheral taste detection in honey bees: What do taste receptors respond to?

چکیده
Understanding the neural principles governing taste perception in species that bear economic importance or serve as research models for other sensory modalities constitutes a strategic goal. Such is case of honey bee (Apis mellifera), which environmentally and socioeconomically important, given its crucial role pollinator agent agricultural landscapes has served traditional model visual olfactory neurosciences on communication, navigation, learning memory. Here we review current knowledge gustatory receptors to provide an integrative view peripheral detection this insect, highlighting specificities commonalities with insect species. We describe behavioral electrophysiological responses several tastant categories relate these responses, whenever possible, known molecular receptor mechanisms. Overall, adopted evolutionary comparative perspective understand define key questions should be answered future centered insect.

Taste Perception in Honey Bees
Taste is crucial for honeybees for choosing profitable food sources, resins, water sources, and for nestmate recognition. Peripheral taste detection occurs within cuticular hairs, the chaetic and basiconic sensilla, which host gustatory receptor cells and, usually a mechanoreceptor cell. Gustatory sensilla are mostly located on the distal segment of the antennae, on the mouthparts, and on the t...
متن کاملLearning context modulates aversive taste strength in honey bees.
The capacity of honey bees (Apis mellifera) to detect bitter substances is controversial because they ingest without reluctance different kinds of bitter solutions in the laboratory, whereas free-flying bees avoid them in visual discrimination tasks. Here, we asked whether the gustatory perception of bees changes with the behavioral context so that tastes that are less effective as negative rei...
متن کاملThe tarsal taste of honey bees: behavioral and electrophysiological analyses
Taste plays a crucial role in the life of honey bees as their survival depends on the collection and intake of nectar and pollen, and other natural products. Here we studied the tarsal taste of honey bees through a series of behavioral and electrophysiological analyses. We characterized responsiveness to various sweet, salty and bitter tastants delivered to gustatory sensilla of the fore tarsi....
متن کاملWhat do love and jealousy taste like?
Metaphorical expressions linking love and jealousy to sweet, sour, and bitter tastes are common in normal language use and suggest that these emotions may influence perceptual taste judgments. Hence, we investigated whether the phenomenological experiences of love and jealousy are embodied in the taste sensations of sweetness, sourness, and bitterness. Studies 1A and 1B validated that these met...
متن کاملPeripheral Coding of Taste
Five canonical tastes, bitter, sweet, umami (amino acid), salty, and sour (acid), are detected by animals as diverse as fruit flies and humans, consistent with a near-universal drive to consume fundamental nutrients and to avoid toxins or other harmful compounds. Surprisingly, despite this strong conservation of basic taste qualities between vertebrates and invertebrates, the receptors and sign...
